Design&Build Mycelium Explorations’ Course, 2024, FuMaLab IBK2, University of Stuttgart

The exhibited panel is an example of coagency between the designer and the fungi in the creation of an ornamental surface.
Substrate inoculated with Ganoderma lucidum mycelium was cast in the soft, textile moulding system. Differences in the mould permeability created local microclimates of dripping water which guided the growth of mycelium. Analogous to the stalagmites formation, the panel developed its own inherently biological aesthetic, rooted within the boundaries set by the designer.
