Telare la Materia Building Material

The Sustainability Department of Benetton Group supports Telare la Materia, a project by Davide Balda and Fabrica aimed at researching possible future applications for clothes that are discarded because they have production defects. The aim of the project is to act at the source, where the waste is created, to prevent it from being taken elsewhere and becoming a polluting material. The collected garments belong to Green B, a line of United Colors of Benetton with sustainability characteristics. Through a manual grinding process, these products are reduced to both synthetic and organic textile fibers and become raw material to be reused in other applications. Telare la Materia offers three different uses: Technosoil, Building material and Nuno Felt. In the first, the organic and biological textile fiber of linen, wool and cotton is used as a vegetal substrate/fertilizing substance and as mulch for the growth of plants, improving the structure of the soil. In the second, the textile fiber is combined with clay waste from the Sile River, in the Treviso area, to create a natural plaster and tiles for interior use, with thermal and acoustic insulation characteristics, together with a brick that can be used in architecture in the construction sector. In the third, the textile fiber is used to create a fabric made manually with a particular wet felting technique.
The project created by Davide Balda (multidisciplinary designer) together with the Fabrica research center and supported by the Sustainability Department of Benetton Group.
