Workshops

During the conference, we will explore unique methods and approaches used in material design, and provide participants with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge: over 7-8 November, we will also hold a series of workshops with national and international experts.

Please note that tickets must be purchased in advance to attend these workshops.

Day 1
7 November

15:30 - 18:30
WORKSHOP

My Own Inner Trilobite

Reconnecting with Ancient Fossils that Nourish Our Soils

A workshop exploring the phosphorus crisis, soil literacy, and future alliances through storytelling, fossil creation, and soil analysis!

This engaging workshop addresses the phosphorus crises and enhances soil literacy through sharing stories and collective making. We would like to invite participants to emerge themselves in the world of soil. We will travel to the deep geological past of Budapest’s fossils, explore the humus under our own feet using traditional agricultural knowledge and imagine collective futures through the creation of decomposing fossils. Participants will enrich the land, create new alliances with human and more-than-human communities and discover their own inner Cambrian creatures.

Participants are asked to bring a handful of soil from their environment to be analysed during the workshop.

WORKSHOP

Colour Communication with RAL Colour

Learn about the RAL Colour System and Mood Boards

In this workshop, participants will learn about the functions of colour in design and how to communicate values and moods through colour, making them perceptible in space. The focus is on needs-oriented design wich contributes to a more sutainable future. Participants will become familiar with the RAL Colour System, colour cards, create mood boards and will experiment with the natural pigments of pHen. pHen is an open-source tool for artists, enabling users to create with a single pigment source in a pen that produces multiple hues and colors.

Day 2
8 November

15:30 - 18:30
WORKSHOP

Touch-Activated Wearable Tech Workshop

Build a Device Using Soft Interfaces

Create Your Own Touch-Activated Device with ZOROBE!

Creativity and innovation meet in the exciting world of wearable technology and now you can take the opportunity to explore this world in our 'wearable-tech' workshop.

Join us to explore the fundamentals of wearable tech, discover market-leading conductive materials, and learn how they are integrated into textiles. These 'soft interfaces' are embedded with electronics and sensors, making them perfect for collecting and transmitting biometric data—ideal for healthcare and sports applications, as well as enhanced sensory experiences.

During the workshop participants will craft their own haptic interface, a touch-activated keychain or fidget toy created with conductive materials and embedded with electronics to light up a LED with a simple touch. These materials are functional and decorative too.

WORKSHOP

Collaborative Material Design

Workshop about Team Communication and Sustainable Design

The environmental impact of materials is shaped by a spectrum of actions—from the choices we make in processing and fabrication to product presentation and post-use considerations. Every stage in the material lifecycle affects environmental impact. By exploring alternative materials, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and embracing a circular economy, we can promote environmentally conscious design and responsible material handling. This workshop invites you to think beyond traditional boundaries and established frameworks.

Join us to practice collaborative methods, enhance communication, and gain insights into transitioning from handcrafts to industrial production through (interdisciplinary) teamwork.

Environmental and material enthusiasts, designers, scientists, engineers, artists, and individuals from other fields are warmly invited to register for this workshop.

WORKSHOP

Mycelium Introductory Workshop

One of the biggest challenges in contemporary design is finding alternatives to fossil-based, polluting materials. Mycelium, the vegetative structure of fungi, is a promising solution due to its many beneficial properties. The growth behavior of mycelium allows for versatile shaping and results in materials with advantageous properties. By varying growth conditions and substrates, mycelium can produce a wide range of materials suitable for use in construction, product design and textiles. In addition, the production of mycelium-based materials is less energy-intensive and the materials are biodegradable, thus becoming an environmentally friendly material alternative.

The Mycelium introductory workshop aims to introduce participants to the key terms of bioengineering and mycelium-based materials. The workshop will be divided into two main parts: the first will focus on theoretical knowledge, covering basic definitions of the field and presenting relevant projects. The second part will offer hands-on experience, where participants will learn about the growth process of mycelium composites by preparing material samples using different organic waste materials.

WORKSHOP

Greenwashing Awareness Workshop

Learn to Detect False Sustainability Claims

Are you a textile industry professional or a conscious consumer looking for sustainable choices? Do you want to write your next article about a clothing brand or find a fair textile supply chain for your brand? Whether you're seeking to buy a fair garment or investigating the sustainability of a product, knowing how to discern true sustainability from mere greenwashing is crucial.

Join our workshop, where you’ll learn the best practices for evaluating whether a product is genuinely sustainable or simply making a good impression. Through interactive discussions and in-depth analysis of real-world case studies, you'll leave with the tools and insights necessary to confidently recognize greenwashing in the textile industry.

This workshop is designed for both textile professionals and consumers, so whether you're shaping industry trends or making informed personal choices, you’ll gain practical knowledge that can make a difference.

WORKSHOP

CMF Design in Practice

Workshop about the Power of Colors and Textures

How can materials transcend their physical properties to evoke and reflect deep human emotions? In this workshop, we'll explore how colors and textures communicate more than just their surface qualities—they can resonate with and move our inner experiences.

Participants of the workshop will engage in a sensory journey to connect material samples with complex emotions, culminating in the creation of a unique material board.
